Vienna - Das alt un Nue
David Starr’s impression of Vienna, (the old and new), was photographed between 2014-2016. He arrived with no pre-conceived ideas, subject or theme - just a blank canvas with intention to create his own impression.
“Photographing a famous city is a challenge but also a great opportunity to create something comparatively different to the millions of photos already taken. Initially, I was stunned with Vienna’s architectural size and visual grandeur. However, for me, the musical history of this city was intoxicating - inspired by the ethereal presence of Beethoven, Mozart, Mahler and the physical presence of the Vienna State Opera House.
At turn of the 19th/20th century - Vienna was a hub for intellectuals, writers, artists and birthplace of Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis. All of this shadowed by the darkness of nazism and the holocaust that would follow.
“The old and the new , in a sense , is partitioned by WWII. The photos are predominantly capture old world , inner city Vienna - but moments of modernism begin to tell a new story. At other times the two align. The essence of ‘Das alt und Nue’ is found within these compositions.”
David’s photographic approach was to walk, explore, see, imagine, compose and capture. What emerged was a richness of lavish colours , sumptuous settings and historical reminders of a new world Vienna.
